[Session 2] The Convergence of AI and Design: Organizational Culture, Personalization, and Ethical Leadership
Session 2 "The Convergence of AI and Design: Organizational Culture, Personalization, and Ethical Leadership" Kaya Kim (Senior Advisor of Design Management Center at LG Electronics) |
[Kaya Kim]
Hello, I'm Kaya Kim, Senior Specialist at Design Center of LG Electronics. Today, I'd like to talk about AI and design from a different perspective than the public or academia, from the perspective of working in a company looking at products and markets.
AI Tools and Design Process
The introduction of AI tools is revolutionizing traditional design workflows. While we never imagined Adobe products would be replaceable, new tools like Sketch and Figma have emerged, and AI tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney are transforming design processes. At LG, we utilize AI tools in product development to create personas, visualize specific scenarios, and produce customized content considering user conditions. For example, when developing refrigerators, we use AI to suggest recipes that consider users' dietary restrictions and preferences.
Changes in Design Culture
The adoption of AI tools is bringing several cultural changes. First, there's a standardization of design skills upward, enabling UX designers to handle graphic work and graphic designers to work on video projects. Second, the transfer of work expertise has become easier, allowing multiple designers to produce results of consistent quality. Third, production costs have significantly decreased, enabling more experimentation and attempts. Fourth, the design process has become more flexible, allowing work to proceed in various ways.
Personalization Services and Privacy
While many dream of having a personal AI assistant like Iron Man's JARVIS, implementing such systems requires vast amounts of personal data. This raises privacy concerns, leading to increased interest in on-device AI. On-device AI can process data within the device without internet connection, providing faster and more secure services.
Designer's Role in AI Development
Designers must participate from the early stages of AI development, playing crucial roles. Their perspective is essential in AI logic and training data selection, algorithm design, determining AI personality and interaction methods, and establishing technical specifications. For these reasons, many companies, including LG, are establishing dedicated design organizations within their AI technology departments.
Ethical Considerations
We must consider various ethical issues such as AI models' energy consumption, algorithmic bias in information, and the balance between corporate profits and social responsibility. For example, efforts are needed to deliberately ensure diversity in content recommendation algorithms or optimize AI model sizes for energy efficiency.
Conclusion
Just as water remains H2O whether it's solid, liquid, or gas, while design tools and methods change, its essence of problem-solving and creating meaningful experiences remains constant. Designers must maintain this essence while adapting to and evolving with changing environments.
Thank you,
