2023 Seoul Design International Forum: New Universe, Docking Seoul

Hello!

I'm Kim Hye-in, supporters of the 2023 Seoul Design International Forum.

Seoul Design International Forum! Do you know about the Seoul Design International Forum? The Seoul Design International Forum is held every year, and it is a huge venue for expanding our view of design and moving in a better direction around the city.

In the meantime, we have moved toward forming a consensus and spreading awareness of social problem-solving design through excellent policies such as social problem-solving design, universal design, and sharing success stories and know-how to improve citizens' lives, enhance city values, change citizens' daily lives, and experience concrete examples.

In 2022, the latest edition was held under the theme of "DESIGN x Seoul: How Does Design Enrich the Future?" to explore in detail how design is being used as an engine to boost value in various city cases as well as how the city's citizens enjoy this value. What's Seoul Design: Know Seoul Design

Seoul Design refers to Seoul's design vision to enhance the city's competitiveness and enable everyone to lead a happy life in response to the challenges faced by the community due to various global issues.

- Develop creative, sustainable design solutions to address the challenges we face in our daily lives to create a safe, convenient, and win-win urban environment.

- Leads the world with innovative technologies and designs that reflect the city's unique characteristics.

- By increasing the number of distinctive design content in everyday life, we will satisfy the sensitivity of citizens and provide impressive experiences to drive the attractiveness of the city.

- We aim for a design community where many people, including experts, industries, and citizens, participate and think together.

Based on this vision, the Seoul Metropolitan Government operates a Universal Design Center to seek better design directions and strive for problem-solving design. In addition, they take the lead in design toward investment for a new future through urban design, and they also work hard on public design to live together.

Seoul Design seems to be more meaningful and meaningful in that it leads the way for designs that give positive social influence and messages beyond simple visually beautiful designs.

What's Docking Seoul? : Feeling Docking Seoul

Against the backdrop of Seoul Design International Forum and Seoul Design, I visited Docking Seoul as supporters of the 2023 Seoul Design International Forum!

The location is next to Seoul Station, 405 Hangang-daero, Jung-gu, Seoul, and Seoul is Seoul Civilian Station!

Docking Seoul is a space where a vehicle passage (parking lamp) connected to the rooftop parking lot of the old Seoul Station has been reborn as a public art platform.

As the space called "Parking Lamp" is utilized, it is a space with a more unique and sensuous atmosphere.

And the name Docking Seoul means that the parking lamp, which was closed in 2004, meets with citizens again through public art works and "connects to a new universe."

(docking: combination of spacecraft, ships, etc.)

After getting out of Seoul Station, go up through the parking lot of Lotte Mart right next door and pass the rooftop park to see Docking Seoul. Isn't the way to get there unique?

Docking Seoul begins with signs harmonizing with pretty plants!

I think it's a very unique space from the entrance.

And as I said earlier, since it's a newly recreated space from parking lot, the path to the space really feels like a parking lot, doesn't it?

We could have considered removing the image of the parking lamp without knowing it was a parking lamp space, but rather, it seems to have been created as a more sensuous and unique space by recreating the image of the parking lamp.

If you follow the road, you'll find a full view of the exhibits in Docking Seoul.

The high-stretching buildings, the sky, blue signs, and vintage parking lots in Seoul seem to give a sensuous feeling to the space itself.

Shall we go in and look at the exhibits?

1. He went round and round the house

The first piece I met was [He went round and round Home]. It was made by Yang Jung-wook.

It's a piece that wraps around a spiral ceiling, and it's based on our daily lives.

The artist carefully observes people's movements and captures them when they walk, stand, or go up and down their shoulders and expresses them as moving pieces. This work, which is not fixed but changes from moment to moment, shows lively movements.

The artist says, "Daily life contains the process and shape of life in a state of possibility that has not always been concluded," conveying the moments of change and infinite possibilities contained in life with hope.

2. The observation point

The second is [The Observation Point] by artist DEFAULT. This is a virtual space that reproduces the space of docking Seoul with realistic 3D images.

It moves according to the viewer's gaze, and each consists of reactive media that can watch different virtual worlds.

The changing observer's gaze connects space and allows access to another world.

The artist says that when he first visited this place, he felt like he was venturing out of the slanted form of space,

[The observation point] created by this background contains various time and space in a single panel.

Each virtual world changes depending on the viewer's location, and this environment provides an experience in which the viewer finds another docking space and explores space-time directly.

Every time I stood in front of myself and moved my body, the graphics really moved and changed, and it was a new experience of moving together with my own eyes and looking into a new space-time, and I felt like I was communicating rather than watching the work.

3. Deep Surface & Blue Star

The deep surface and the blue star were also seen, respectively, by artist So-young Jung and Team Co-Work. The explanations of the two paintings were accompanied by the words of an astronomer and a physicist.

"Balances and imbalances repeatedly hit swirls, creating a universe"

Astronomer Lee Tae-hyung's words are especially impressive.

I think it was very impressive that these principles of the universe and the values of society meet together to form a work of art.

4. My color of the universe

And we could see some of the works that 72 citizens participated in, called [My Color of the universe].

When I looked up various cases of Seoul Design, it is very impressive that citizens were together, as it focuses on moving in a positive social direction such as universal design.

It is said that the various colors of the sky that citizens saw and the names for these colors were made in [space color palette].

(13 second video. Only the color of the sticker on the same piece changes)

Citizens gave unique names for each color, and it was fun to see because there were many emotional and pretty names.

Just like the name Citizens gave itself, I could imagine the color. As there are many colors, it looks so pretty that I recommend you visit them in person!

5. The Net of Life - Arch

Lastly, I was able to see a piece called [The Net of Life - Arch]. It was made by Kim Joo-hyun.

The above work shows the value of the role that the individuals that make up the community have.

This is a series of several bars that, when viewed from the side, looks like a horizontal line, but when viewed from the top, looks like a line that connects the dots.

The appearance of the pipes interlocking and forming an organic whole expresses the interrelationship between individuals and society, and between humans and nature, which are intertwined within a huge mesh.

The artist added a subtle glow, hoping that the cold steel pipes could move people's minds. Like the rods in the painting, he hopes to hold each other's hands with his heart.

[Docking Seoul Exploration]

Docking Seoul is a space that seems far from art in that it used to be a parking lamp, and it has come as a very unique space in itself in that it has recreated a space that has been closed for a long time into an art space.

If I read the explanation slowly, it felt more meaningful and cool because each piece was not just visually beautiful, but it contained profound and beautiful values and meanings.

I visited after seeing a few pictures before I went, but when I saw it in person, I felt more vividly the grand and cool atmosphere of Docking Seoul.

In addition, during the process of finding out more about Seoul design as well as visiting docking Seoul, I learned in detail that Seoul design is really working hard in a wide variety of design fields such as public design, universal design, and urban design, and is moving in a positive and socially valuable direction. If you are interested in design, you should check it out and participate in the contents that you can participate in as well as docking Seoul.

Dorking Seoul, a fun and unique space! I hope you can visit and see the amazing works in more detail and vividly in person!
